Why I like this tribe.

topic posted Mon, April 16, 2007 - 2:07 PM by  Ari
I was thinking about leaving, just because I thought that it might be bad for my mental health, being too involved in a forum devoted to ineffectual, frustrated complaint.
BUT, I am a broke motherfucker who goes to Burning Man just because I enjoy it, in spite of all the louts who wish to prove how enlightened or creative they are. I find much of the criticism in this tribe really inspiring, even when it isn't meant to be constructive. I mean that sincerely. I am a member of the Burning Man tribe, as well, but I visit this one more often.

Thank you all for bitching so zealously.

Dont think you should cuss at the poor dude just cause he admits to going to burning man. After all that just gives the brainwashed fools ammo for their arguments.
Seriously I think I would like to know so things. Like for example.

Do you think that if everyone who goes to Burning man would have thrown themselfs into the 2000 election with the same maniac fever they devote to this event that Bush would have been defeted. If not then why ?
Do you honestly belive that this event is ecologicly harmless ?
Can you give me an honest example of origanal ART that has actually happened at this event ?
Can you aquee that the time ,money, energy, and GAS spent on this event is actually seriously worthwhile ?

      Seriously.......I truly want to know.

"Can you give me an honest example of origanal ART that has actually happened at this event ? "

I've seen lots of photographs of really cool art. I've also seen a lot of photographs of some truly horrific "art"

Cool ? Maybe. I would really like an example, an idea, perhaps even a minor thought that could be considered original and uniqe that may make going to this event less of a waste of time.
I work in the entetaniment industry in Las Vegas, I build sets and props. I see new ideas and concepts done brilliantly all the time. What I rarely see is any art.
When I went to BM I was told that there would be so much new artitic stuff that it would blow my mind and I would have a spiritual moment.
The art was not art, it was crap that would not even get a glance at a Vegas art fair, which is saying a lot because Vegas has almost zero art culture.
As for original, lets face it most of what is done at BM has been done somewhere else for less hassle. Plus the interactive art is nothing more than a sombodys dream of an oversized sandlot and playground. In other words these folks are still livinging in their adolesent days, which is great for them.
It does not make the trip worth it to me however, all that effort must be worth somthing to me.

I'd call David Best's Temples "unique"

Though seriously - ALL art is derivative. Sorry, but you can't knock BM for having a bunch of derivative art. Hell, go to the SFMOMA right now for a show entitled "Picasso and American Art"

HUH? since when? i can knock bm for anything and everything.

stuck in traffic? i blame burners.
taxes too high, food not cooked right?
i bet some burner had something to do with it.

screw those mass polluting dorks who can make anytihng ok since it's done in the name of "art"

i talked to Art yesterday, and he's pissed. leave him out of it

This years theme at Burning Turd is " Green Man " !!! The hypocrisy of these idiots never ceases to amaze me. Can you imagine " Green Man " being celebrated in a sea of RVs , trucks, art cars etc ! Such bullshit ! " Polluting Man ' is a more apt description. If they had any kind of REAL community they wouldn't need a clean up crew to stay out there for two+ months cleaning up after all the lazy direspectful weekend warriors who really don't give a shit about the environment. They wallow in their own garbage and call it a good time.

All Burning Man consists of is a high dollar party in the desert. Any attempt to try to call it more is ludicrous. the "art" is an excuse. The Art Curator "Lady Bee" is a blank hole. The attempts to market the event are blatant lies by a group of burned out folks who found themselves on a gravy train they never imagined, so they attempt to perpetuate it with Larry Harvey re-writing history as he sees fit, "Lady Bee" provisioning art by people stupid enough to have a 'rendezvous' with her. And all the while, the internal management decisions get made with a vicious bent that makes Wal Mart look humanitarian towards it's workers.

What is needed is more press that these folks are hypocrites picking the pockets of enchanted low-budget artists and counter-culture wannabes who need to fly the freak flag of being a 'burner'.

Visit the playa on 4 th of July, it's more like what the event started out as, just a few hundred people, spread way out in the desert, no roads, no rules, no LLC. What's more, the "4th of juplaya" gathering really irritates the LLC. There was nearly 1000 people last year.

And what's more, on the 4th of july, no one will charge you money to use a public land.

That is a scam that needs to stop. If we can only prove that the LLC and the local BLM office are conspiring to report the numbers lower than 40,000. There is pressure from the Washington DC BLM to keep the numbers below that. I have no proof, just insider whispers coming from people who have shred the campfires with LLC and BLM people, half drunk or drugged ( Hey I have smoked pot with a BLM ranger who was firmly in the LLC's pocket.)

Again, if I could prove this, there would be no BM2007.

Oh my, a conspiracy! Something must be done!

        zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Problem with conspiracies is that ones we suspect are rarely true, and the ones that are real ( and done right) no one ever knows about.

The possibility of the BLM/LLC thing was raised to me by a Gerlach resident. The idea was given weight by a trained tracker who stated an opinion that the city seemed to be populated by roughly 50,000 or more on Friday of the event last year.

Take it with a grain of salt, but i do wonder if the LLC is doing what I speculate.

I am former staff, was the DPW's night dispatcher for a number of years. I had to stay awake and sober whilst all the bigwigs got fucked up. Tongues loosen .

Oh, and hey, if it's boring, why do you read it and grace it with the *time* it takes to go
            zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

seems to me that in these cases all the zzzzz posters want is *attention*...

What I want is to raise awareness. I dislike hypocrites and after getting to know the folks who run Burning Man
I find them to be shining examples of hypocrisy.

Raising these issues on a anti-burning man tribe makes more sense to me that to try to raise it on the main BM tribe, which is primarily populated by the kool-aid drinkers....

Again, if you find it boring, go away. Vote with your mouse.

I think the point is, this tribe is called "I'm-sick-of-hearing-about-burning-man" for a reason.

That reason being, we're sick of hearing about it and we don't really care.

But you're welcome to keep talking anyway, this is a free forum open to all.

                It's all good.

I just like to see posts with some content, it's too easy to say zzzzzzzzzzzzz or similar when one doesn't like what is said. It's a "me too", only reversed. As in " I don't have anything to say, but I'm going to chirp up anyway." And from what I can see, it sometimes gets done by people who otherwise seem way too smart for that!

No offense was intended, just light shone on the behavior.

And for a tribe of folks sick of hearing about _______________ , the topic sure comes up a lot! and usually with a vicious humor...

                  bunch of copycats.
i was totally put to sleep by ther burner spouting positive burn crap...

i aM not so bored with the idea of ending this mass pollution pretending to be art that is bm.

                  >>And for a tribe of folks sick of hearing about _______________ , the topic sure comes up a lot! and usually with a vicious humor<<<

                  uh, please.

do you not get it ?

should we change the name of the tribe to " place for people who aresick of hearing about burning man from losers who love it to complain about said losers"

                  heheh

Well in all reality its what we have in common. Complaining, slaming, or otherwise outright bitching and comparing stories and notes or the biggest waste of time in human history.

"Again, if I could prove this, there would be no BM2007"
All you need to prove about B.F. Man is that they allow children there(Proven by one of their threads from a girl, now 19, that had been going there since she was 13 on one of the thread links on this tribe) in an "unsafe" environment for children(Sex, alcohol, drugs).
They would then have to card everyone(To, at least 18), thus, cutting their #'s dramatically, along with all the idiotic talk about the event.
It won't kill the need for stupid people to gather, as they need to feel like they are liked by someone(When surrounded by fools, the lesser fools stand out as "cool".), but it might help some of the future generations to not get caught up in the prime idiots alliance.

wow I never heard of the fourth of july event on the playa! Now that I would attend. My perception of camping to get away from civilization. To me the burningman is just hypocritical, like you said. It's a city, a temporary one but just another faction of art imitating life. Or thier attempt at art.

Let's face it...catty mockery of the common culture if fun!
4th of juplaya....might be free, but it's still hot and dirty with not enough portapotties....
I don't have to have ever gone to tell you that!
